WHATCOM HOMEFRONT

Whatcom County's link to local troops serving in Afghanistan and Iraq

About Us
We are an all volunteer organization and all monetary donations are applied to the costs of getting these care packages put together and sent. We accept donations of items to put into the boxes but ask that you contact us first to find out what we need as there are restrictions and guidelines that we must follow. The cost of sending the boxes varies with the size of the boxes. Sometimes we send small priority mail boxes that cost about $12 per box (not including contents), sometimes we send very big apple boxes which may cost around $40 per box (not including contents). We have sent as many as 85 boxes and as few as 23 in a given packing. The number of boxes we send varies as troops rotate in and out.

If you would like to help with the cost of shipping these support boxes send your donation to:
Whatcom Homefront
P.O.Box 32328
Bellingham, WA 98228-4328

If you would like to donate material for the boxes please write to us (whatcommilitary@yahoo.com )and we will give you a list of the things that we need.

We love to receive cards and letters from children and the community and include them in the boxes. We have no political or religious affiliation and we screen all cards and letters for content so please keep the message upbeat and noncontroversial.

These boxes are enjoyed by the troops who receive them and occasionally they write to let us know that it makes them feel good to know that our community appreciates their service. Family members are invited to pack these boxes, which gives them an opportunity to meet other people from Whatcom County who also have loved ones deployed to a war zone. Having a family member deployed is a very stressful experience which is often only understood by others who are in the same situation.

A thank you from one of our troops:

Dear Everyone!
My name is1LT Jeffrey Reese and I'm writing on behalf of myself and PFC Sidney Hardy to send a resounding THANK YOU to everyone involved with the Whatcom Homefront for the apple box care packages we received two days ago.  Outstanding care packages, it is obvious you have honed your skills in 6 years of sending care packages, everything in our box was something we can use or something we need.  Thank you so very much.

It is a honor to serve in the US Army, and to know that people back home in good ole' Whatcom County are thinking of us lifts our spirits.  It is back home where we want to be, but with your support it makes being deployed a little bit easier.   The night we received the packages here at Camp Justice in northern Baghdad, I immediately pulled out the harmonica of my box and started to play for the first time, to the grief of all around me.  Sidney and I appreciate everything you sent, although others wish you wouldn't have included that harmonica.  I'm still playing it though...

Included is a couple photos of Sidney and I enjoying our gifts.  I set up my Christmas tree with battery powered lights (great invention!), ornaments and candle stick.  The food items are most devoured, and the football is a great at helping pass the time.

I know this is just a short note, but please know how much your thoughtfulness and generosity is appreciated.  It is folks like you that make our deployment here more comfortable and enjoyable!

Sincerely,
Jeffrey Reese and Sydney Hardy
